Vitamin E - Tocopherol
Vitamin E (or tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin. Generally extracted from soybeans and sunflower seeds, tocopherol plays an essential role in protecting the membrane of all cells in the body. Indeed, it has strong antioxidant properties and is commonly used as an antioxidant, meaning it helps neutralize free radicals in the body.
In addition, it prevents or reduces the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). This oxidation of LDL is associated with the development of atherosclerosis and therefore cardiovascular disease.
Vitamin E also has anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet and vasodilator properties. These effects, which are not related to its antioxidant activity, also play a cardioprotective role.
D Alpha Tocopherol is naturally available vitamin E. Its chemical formula is C29H50O2 and its molar mass is 430.717 g/mol.
It is the most active and bioavailable form of tocopherol. Therefore, our body prefers to absorb and use this form. Furthermore, it appears as a yellow-brown viscous liquid.
Alpha-tocopheryl acetate DL is a racemic mixture of D and L forms of alpha-tocopheryl acetate. Therefore, it is a synthetic mixture of tocopherol molecules and one of the most powerful antioxidant tocopherols. The chemical formula for alpha tocopheryl acetate (D or L form) is C31H52O3. Therefore, the molar mass of this compound is 472.754 g/mol.
The antioxidant activity of this compound is due to the presence of the phenolic hydrogen on the 2H-1-benzopyran-6-ol ring. In addition, it also has four methyl groups on the 6-chromanol ring.
However, the natural D form of alpha-tocopherol is more active than this racemic mixture.
